Understanding the Recertification Year Update

What the 2026 recertification change means for your CCI certification

Effective January 1, 2026, CCI implemented a program-wide update to how recertification cycles are structured: the mandatory recertification year requirement has been removed from all applicable CCI certifications.

Under the previous model, the recertification process worked in two distinct phases. First, certificants completed a 3- or 5-year accrual period during which they earned recertification points. After that accrual period ended, certificants then had an additional, separate recertification year in which to submit their application. This meant the full process effectively spanned one year beyond the accrual period itself. For example, a nurse certified in 2022 would accrue points from 2022 through 2026, and then have all of 2027 as a dedicated recertification application year.

With this update, that additional recertification year no longer exists as a separate phase. The recertification cycle is now a single, continuous 3- or 5-year window. Certificants can earn points and submit those points at any time throughout that window, all the way through the final day of their validity period. There is no cut off for points submission, and no separate application year at the end.

Because the recertification year has been absorbed into the cycle itself, expiration dates across all applicable certifications were adjusted to reflect this streamlined structure. A certificant who previously had an accrual period ending in 2026 and a recertification year running through 2027 will now see an expiration date of 2026 rather than 2027. The cycle is shorter by one year in calendar terms, but the time available to earn and log points remains the same. The certification is simply no longer extended by a standalone recertification application year at the end.

This change was communicated to certificants via direct email, on the CCI website, and through CCI’s social media channels regarding the change. The FAQs below address the most common questions about how this affects your certification.

FAQs

CCI removed the mandatory standalone recertification year from all applicable certification cycles. Previously, certificants completed a multi-year accrual period and then had an additional year to submit their recertification application. That separate application year no longer exists. Your recertification period is now a single, continuous 3- or 5-year window during which you can both earn points and submit your application.

This change applies to all CCI certifications that include a recertification process. The CFPN does not have a recertification requirement and is not affected by this update.

Because the standalone recertification year has been folded into the certification cycle itself, expiration dates were adjusted accordingly. Under the old model, your cycle ended one year after your accrual period closed. Under the new model, your cycle ends when your accrual period ends. If your expiration date moved earlier than expected, this structural change is the reason.

No. Your expiration date may be earlier than it would have been under the old model, but the time available to earn and log recertification points has not changed. Previously, points were earned during the accrual period and the subsequent year was used only for application submission. Now, you can earn points and apply throughout your entire validity period. The recertification process has been simplified, not reduced.

Yes. CCI certifications are voluntary credentials governed by CCI’s published program policies. Each credential’s Candidate Handbook states that CCI reserves the right to amend procedures at any time, including those related to certification timelines. This update was applied consistently across all applicable certificants in alignment with accreditation standards and credentialing best practices.

We understand this change may feel disruptive if you had mapped out a recertification timeline in advance.

If your recertification year was originally set as 2026, you are not impacted by this change. You can recertify at any time prior to December 31, 2026 in order to avoid your certification lapsing.
