Think Tank Press Release

Hello everyone - I hope this message finds you well and enjoying the beginning of fall! It is the most beautiful time of year here in Denver and we are enjoying the vivid autumn leaf colors.

I have heard from many of you that you found the Continued Competence Leadership Forum a valuable experience. Thank you for your thoughtful notes of support and enthusiasm! The CCI Board is meeting next month, during which time we will discuss how to best build on the work we began together last month.

I have attached a press release that has been sent to appropriate media. Feel free to distribute it to your colleagues or local publications that may be interested.

We are also in the process of finalizing the revised Think Tank website which will include a meeting summary, photos and the final drawings. Look for an email next week with a link to that information.

We look forward to communicating with you regularly about our ongoing conversation regarding the important topic of continued competence. Please continue to share your thoughts, suggestions and resources with our online community.

Post-Think Tank Letter

Dear Think Tank Participant:

What a productive and stimulating three days! We are very grateful for your participation and contribution to the important work we began together earlier this week at the CCI Continued Competence Forum: From Pieces to Policy.

We have provided you an opportunity to provide feedback on your experience and value of this event. (We are in the assessment business after all!) In addition to providing anonymous feedback using our standardized survey, we also invite you to post any comments, share resources or provide recommendations for other leading experts or organizations that we should engage in this ongoing conversation.

We are in the process of reorganizing the CCI Think Tank website to include photos, a press release, and other output from our meeting. In the meantime, feel free to visit the Discussion Area to access the presentations and other resources shared during our time together.

Again, thank you to all of you. We look forward to staying in conversation about the vital topic of continued competence in nursing.

From Monday, September 17th.
Live from the CCI Think Tank

Dear Think Tank Participants:

What a wonderful start to our gathering! We are nothing if not flexible in our willingness to approach an issue. We thank you for that commitment to discovery and deliberation.

As we agreed, tomorrow’s goal is to begin to develop a shared vision for continued competence in nursing. A select group of us will work tonight to develop a set of scenarios from which we will work tomorrow.

We are grateful to our speakers for sharing their wisdom and experience with us. As we discovered during our Trends Activity, one of our greatest assets is our ability to share lessons and information. We thank our talented presenters for allowing us to leverage that valuable knowledge.

We have updated our site with relevant supporting documents, including the report from the Virginia Chapter of AARP, the Nursing Outlook article from the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN), and the Good Medical Practices paper from our medical colleagues.

To see these documents, as well as copies of today’s presentations and a photo of the Trends Diorama, go to http://www.cc-institute.org/tt07_discuss.aspx.  In honoring our commitment to community, collaboration and conversation, we invite you to contribute to the discussion while there.

We are sincere when we say this work belongs to all of you. CCI is proud to be the convener of this activity, but it is only through the intellectual capital and intellect that each of you is willing to offer that we are able to move our agenda forward.

Thank you for your ongoing participation and attentiveness in this work.

From Wednesday, September 12th.
A Message from Liz Wiseman

I’d like to introduce myself in advance of meeting you in person next week at the CCI Continued Competence Leadership Forum.  I’m Liz Wiseman, President, Mindshare Learning Systems, and I’ll be facilitating the session, along with several colleagues and other contributors.   I have been working with the team at CCI to design the forum, and I’m eager to meet each of you next week and begin our work together.

We’ve designed the forum to be an engaging session, where we’ll leverage the collective intelligence and capabilities of the group.  We’ll use techniques from action learning and action research and will work together to advance the state of the art of continued competence assessment.

If you have not done so already, please take a look at the forum website to check the agenda and see the impressive group of people who will be assembled.

Please let me or the staff at CCI know if you have any questions.

A few last minute reminders:

  • Registration and dinner/cocktails begins at 5:00 pm on Sunday evening, Sept 16 in the Great Hall.
  • We start promptly at 6:30 pm with an introduction and a team learning activity
  • The team activity is a bit messy, so look for a gift from CCI in the registration bag you will receive at check-in!
  • The weather is predicted to be just right for the outdoor dinner we have planned for Monday evening. The forecast is for a high of 75 degrees, and a low of 61.

Looking forward to working with you.

Liz

From Friday, September 7th.
Biography Request

Dear Forum Participant:

The CCI Continued Competence Leadership Forum – From Pieces to Policy is just one week away!  We want to take this opportunity to remind you of key meeting information:

Please take a look at the participant bios that are now up on the website, and get to know your fellow colleagues before meeting them.  If you haven’t completed a biographical survey or sent a picture please do so, and we can add you to our directory.

  • Don’t forget to read the pre-meeting materials noted in the Continued Competence Reading Library. You can also add to or comment on the readings provided.
  • The event will start with Registration and Cocktails at 5:00 pm on Sunday, September 16th at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Hotel in the Great Hall.  The main session will be held in the Aspen room.
  • Dress for the meeting is business casual and the dinner Monday evening will be outside, weather permitting.
  • If you are flying into Reagan National Airport the hotel is 10 minutes away and the free hotel shuttle runs every half hour.  If you are driving, the hotel is located 5 miles SW of Washington, DC at 5000 Seminary Road, follow route 395 to exit 4 West to Seminary Road the hotel is on left.  Hotel parking is $13 per day or $9 overnight for hotel guests.  There is a Metro stop at Pentagon City and the hotel shuttle picks up at that stop.

Until then, please don’t hesitate to share your thoughts or ideas in our online journal. And if you have any questions regarding the Forum, please contact Charmaine Nicolau, CCI Executive Assistant, at cnicolau@cc-institute.org.

Final Planning

Dear Forum Participant:

The CCI Continued Competence Leadership Forum is in the final planning stages and we are excited that there will be over 40 thought leaders in attendance! Please take a look at the very prestigious participant list, along with all of the event details on the website at http://www.cc-institute.org/tt07_index.aspx. The event is just two weeks away and we want to go over some last minute details.

The event will start with Registration and Cocktails at 5:00 pm on Sunday, September 16th at the Hilton Alexandria Mark Hotel. If you are flying into Reagan National Airport the hotel is 10 minutes away and the free shuttle runs every half hour. If you are driving, the hotel is located 5 miles SW of Washington, DC at 5000 Seminary Road, follow route 395 to exit 4 West to Seminary Road the hotel is on left. Parking is $13 per day or $9 overnight for hotel guests.

Since we have just a short time together to do our work, we want to make sure we are all familiar with the literature that will provide the foundation for much of our dialogue. To that end, please make sure you have read the two articles in the Required Reading section of the website before the first session on Monday. Thank you to Deborah and Jean for posting in the Discussion Journal section of the website. We encourage you to join in on the discussion or post some thought provoking questions of your own.

If you have any questions regarding the Forum, please contact Charmaine Nicolau, CCI Executive Assistant, at cnicolau@cc-institute.org.

From Friday, August 24th.
Agenda

Dear Forum Participant:

Our meeting agenda has been finalized and we are pleased to announce that the following experts have agreed to share their experience and perspectives:

Joyce Dubow, Senior Advisor - AARP Office of Policy and Strategy, will make the case for importance of ongoing competence assessment by looking through lens of patient safety.

  • Carol Clothier, Vice President, Federation of State Medical Boards (FSMB), will share a medical coalition’s experience in moving forward the state of the art in continued competence.

We will be building on their comments and on relevant literature in order to create a vision for continued competence in nursing. In preparation for that work, we ask you to review the articles in the Required Reading section of our Continued Competence Reading Library. A shared awareness of this information will allow us to move our discussion forward from a common place of understanding.

We also invite you to share your comments about these articles, or make suggestions for additions to our library. This will not only further our goal of community-building, but will also allow us to develop a robust source of information on this vital topic.

Lastly, we would like to remind those few of you who have not responded to our pre-meeting biography survey to do so as soon as possible (if you need the survey questions again, please contact zpotts@cc-institute.org). We have begun to prepare the participant directory and we want to make sure all of you are included.

From Friday, August 17th.
Survey

Dear Thought Leader:

This is just a friendly reminder to submit your response to our biographical survey and to confirm your hotel reservation (http://www.hilton.com/en/hi/groups/personalized/dcaahhf_cci/index.jhtml). The deadline for both of these activities is today, August 17th. To complete the survey, simply fill in the questions on the email and hit reply. If you have difficulty accessing the survey or uploading your photo, please contact zpotts@cc-institute.org. Next week, we will be posting the survey answers at http://www.cc-institute.org/tt07_pindex.aspx.

We also have heard from many of you about your arrival and departure times. Here is some information that may help those of you who still need to make your flight arrangements:

  • We will begin at about 5:00pm on Sunday September 16th.
  • We will finish at about 3:30 on Tuesday September 18th.
  • The hotel is about 10 minutes Ronald Reagan National Airport; a free shuttle is provided. While you can fly into Washington Dulles airport, it is at least a 30-40 minute drive from the airport to the hotel.

A final agenda, including times, will be posted to the website by the beginning of next week.

Also, we want to use this opportunity to connect and share our perspectives on the issue of continued competence prior to coming to together next month. To that end, Michelle Byrne, RN, PhD, CNOR, takes the first plunge into our community blog. Read Michelle’s post, at http://www.cc-institute.org/tt07_discuss.aspx and share your responses.

Thank you for your active participation in this community of experts and scholars. Have a great weekend!
