TrueNorth Award 2013
2013 TrueNorth Award Winner:
Abington Memorial Hospital
2013 Honorable Mention Distinctions:
Memorial Hermann - The Woodlands, Houston, TX
Poudre Valley Hospital, Fort Collins, CO
The Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI) announced Abington Memorial Hospital (AMH) as the winner of the 2013 TrueNorth Award. The award serves as a means to recognize organizations whose “true north” guides their nursing staff to be lifelong learners, models of competent practice and continuous advocates for excellence through CNOR certification.
AMH, located in Abington, PA, boasts an 87.5% CNOR certification rate among perioperative nurse leadership at the facility, as well as a having 46% of its eligible OR nursing staff CNOR certified. Along with its impressive CNOR certification rate, AMH received the prestigious TrueNorthAward because of the facility’s systematic focus on implementing programs to reward and recognize perioperative nurses who become certified. These initiatives include prominently displaying a plaque with the names of all certified nurses, personalized “thank you” notes from the certification Champion on Certified Nurses Day, and a pay increase for certification as part of the facility’s clinical ladder program.
AMH rewards its certified nurses with reimbursement of certification and recertification fees up to $300, upon successful completion. A recognition check is also offered to certified nurses each December. As a result of the focus on specialty certification, AMH has realized a noteworthy increase in its annual certification growth rate, improved employee retention and recruitment, as well as an increase in professionalism and job satisfaction.
CCI developed the TrueNorth Award program because the organization firmly believes specialty nursing certification ultimately leads to quality patient care, as registered nurses are required to validate their specialized knowledge and skills through the rigorous CNOR certification exam process. Certification in many ways acts as a compass directing a nurse's clinical practice towards the industry accepted standards.
The TrueNorth Award, which will be presented onsite at AMH, includes a celebratory reception, commemorative plaque, and five CNOR recertification vouchers which may be distributed at AMH's discretion.
Two other facilities received “Honorable Mention” distinction for their efforts to support certification: Memorial Hermann - The Woodlands, Houston, TX and Poudre Valley Hospital, Fort Collins, CO.
