New Data Confirms That Faculty Shortage Hampers Efforts to Address Nursing Shortage

Despite significant gains in enrollments, more than 32,000 qualified applicants were turned away from baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs last year, according to new survey data released by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

Among them were almost 3,000 students who could potentially fill faculty roles. Increasing enrollment in baccalaureate programs, where the vast majority of nurses with master’s and doctoral degrees begin their education, is seen as a key to addressing the nation’s diminishing supply of nurse educators.

However, the number of graduates from master’s and doctoral program increased only slightly, by 669 in master’s programs and only eight in doctoral programs. For more information about this survey.
