CCI to Publish New Textbook on Surgical Assisting

 

DENVER, CO (Feb. 21, 2008)—CCI announced today that it will partner with editors Jane Rothrock, DNSc, RN, CNOR, FAAN and Patricia Seifert, RN, MSN, CNOR, CRNFA, FAAN to produce a new textbook for healthcare professionals who assist in surgery.  The scheduled release date for Assisting in Surgery: Patient-Centered Care is summer 2009.  

“This is a one-of-a-kind resource for anyone that assists in surgery,” Robin Lazenby, RN, BSN, MS, CNOR, CCI President said. “The publication’s central theme of patient-centered care reflects the essence of CCI’s commitment to advance the competency development of all those who provide extraordinary care to their patients.”

CCI and the editors will recruit multiple experts in surgical assisting to write more than 15 chapters in general subject areas including clinical skills, patient-focused care and clinical applications. Throughout the textbook, clinical consultants from a variety of disciplines will provide expert commentary on the topic being addressed.

“We are excited to work with CCI to create a resource that focuses on the patient and outlines the skills and competencies necessary to provide the best care,” Rothrock said.

Both authors bring extensive experience in perioperative nursing to the partnership. 

Dr. Rothrock has been in perioperative nursing since 1969. In 1978, she joined the faculty at Delaware County Community College, where she is currently Professor and Director of Perioperative Programs. Her responsibilities include entry-level, post-basic RN education for perioperative nursing and advanced skill preparation for RN first assistants. Dr. Rothrock has been involved with the education of more than 3,500 registered nurses for professional practice in perioperative patient care.   

She has authored four perioperative textbooks, published more than 50 articles and presented a wide range of topics to audiences across the country and at international meetings. She is AORN past-President, served in 1996 - 1997 as the Chair of the AORN Project Team on Professional Practice Issues, and chaired the AORN Project Team on a Professional Practice Model for Perioperative Nursing in 1998 – 1999.

She currently serves as the Vice-president of the AORN Foundation, and is an editor of one of AORN’s new publications, Tea & Toast for the Perioperative Nurses Spirit.

Seifert has more than 30 years of experience in the operating room environment. For more than 20 years, she has been a front-line manager in cardiac surgical services and has participated in the development and implementation of at least four cardiac surgical programs with responsibility for capital, operational and staffing budgets. She has also functioned as an RN First Assistant on more than 3,000 cardiac surgery procedures. Currently she serves as the Education Coordinator, Cardiovascular Operating Room at the Inova Heart and Vascular Institute in Falls Church, VA.

Seifert is a past president of AORN, past Lead Coordinator of the Nursing Organizations Alliance, a member of Sigma Theta Tau, a Virginia Henderson Fellow, and is listed in Who's Who in the World. She is a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing.  Seifert has given numerous presentations and has authored four books and numerous articles on subjects including cardiac surgery, RN First Assisting, patient safety, critical thinking, Magnet hospitals, aging, ethics, education, and leadership. 

This is the second textbook CCI has produced in partnership with industry and clinical experts. The other is an updated perioperative textbook designed for all nurses who care for patients undergoing operative and invasive procedures.
