CCI Launches Pharmacology Reference Module

CCI Launches Pharmacology Reference Module DENVER, CO (April 24, 2006)—The Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI) announced its latest educational resource for operating room (OR) nurses, the Perioperative Pharmacology Reference Book and Pocket Guide, available online at http://www.cc-institute.org/stor_pharm.aspx.

“One of the most important roles certified nurses play is as a patient advocate, promoting safe care throughout the surgical process,” said Shannon Carter, Chief Executive Officer, CCI. “This guide fills a void and helps ensure that OR nurses are knowledgeable about the medications their patients receive.”

The pharmacology product line contains two components. First, the reference book that outlines common medications administered in the surgical setting delineated by drug class. Each listing includes the indications, dosing, administration guidelines, contraindications and side effects or adverse reactions of the drug. It also features a glossary, review questions and case studies to reinforce learning. The second piece is a pharmacology pocket guide designed for nurses to consult daily for a quick reference of all the information presented in the book.

“Pharmacology draws on different disciplines including anatomy, physiology, chemistry, psychology and microbiology—all areas that the OR nurse must have knowledge of in the operating room,” said Laura S. Kerby, RN, BSN, CNOR, CCI President. “Understanding these medications, especially their related clinical complications, is essential to our patients’ safety.”

CCI launched the pharmacology learning module in March at the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) Annual Congress in Washington, DC. To order a copy, visit www.cc-institute.org or contact CCI at (888) 257-2667.
