Sharon A. McNamara is an internationally recognized speaker and consultant on perioperative practice. She is currently Coordinator for the AORN Journal Patient Safety column, a Collaborative Coach for the North Carolina Hospital Association Quality Center, and a consultant on patient safety and perioperative practice.
Prior to her recent semi-retirement, she was Director of Surgical Services for WakeMed Health and Hospitals in Raleigh, NC, where she was responsible for clinical and fiscal performance of Perioperative Services on the Raleigh Campus. Prior to WakeMed, McNamara was Director of Surgical Services, responsible for operations at two hospitals at Kaleida Health in Buffalo, NY.
Sharon was the 2005-2006 President of AORN, and served as President-Elect, Secretary, and a member of the AORN Board of Directors. During her presidency, AORN led the “National Time Out Campaign” to eliminate medication errors. McNamara also chaired the Council on Surgical & Perioperative Safety (2010), and held offices as Vice Chair, and Secretary/Treasurer. In 2012, McNamara was the recipient of the “Nurse of the Year Award” from the North Carolina State Council of Perioperative Nurses.
She is a renowned speaker and author on Perioperative Nursing, Patient Safety, Leadership, and Diversity.
