CCI Board of Directors Leadership Characteristics
CCI seeks the contributions of leaders who possess and demonstrate strong leadership skills. To that end, CCI seeks board candidates who demonstrate the following attributes:
- Ability and commitment to work with diverse groups and individuals to achieve shared goals.
- Recognition of governance as a distinct specialty and role.
- Ability to think strategically and proactively.
- Commitment to ongoing self-assessment, leadership, and lifelong learning.
- Commitment to role model behaviors consistent with the organization's mission, vision, and values and to act in the best interest of the organization.
- Demonstrated understanding of trends and issues that affect surgical practice and certification.
- Willingness to teach, coach, and mentor others.
- Ability to prioritize and translate information clearly and succinctly to others, so that all achieve shared understanding.
- Ability to set a context or framework for the work to be done and the outcomes to be achieved.
- Ability to respectfully listen to others and consider the input of others in the governance process.
These characteristics, in addition to experience requirements and board member responsibilities, provide a framework for choosing future board candidates.
Board Candidate Experience Requirements
CCI believes that by meeting a defined set of experience requirements, a candidate will be able to clearly demonstrate possession of the desired competencies for CCI leaders. Therefore, to be considered for an RN position on the CCI Board of Directors, candidates must meet the following requirements:
- Possession of CNOR certification
- Possession of a minimum of a bachelor's degree
- Experience as a member of one of the following:
- CCI Exam Committee
- CCI Board or ad hoc committee
- External credentialing body or committee
- No person is eligible for membership on the CCI Board of Directors while holding an elected position with AORN.
Additionally, candidates may be chosen if they have experience in several of the following areas desirable for a well-balanced board:
- AORN chapter leadership.
- National professional committee chair experience.
- Work-team leader experience.
- Community project committee membership.
- Volunteer governance experience.
- Financial experience such as budgeting, financial planning, or donor fundraising.
- Business, entrepreneurial or new business ventures experience.
- Media or public relations experience.
- Marketing experience.
- Experience with other healthcare issues.

Begins post-Congress, immediately following election.
Activities
Two 3-day face-to-face board meetings per year; one-day Congress board meeting; various assignments during Congress week; 6 to 8 hours of independent work per month; board committee work as assigned; email correspondence weekly.
Please note that CCI pays all expenses related to committee or board meetings in accordance with travel policy.

Board Member Responsibilities Detail
As a progressive, cutting-edge organization, CCI emphasizes accountability and responsibility in all of its endeavors — including selection of its future leaders. To that end, CCI directors govern with an emphasis on outward vision and strategic leadership, with clear distinction between governance and administrative roles. Board members focus on the future, while making proactive, collective decisions. The CCI Board of Directors has approved the following board member responsibilities:
- Board members develop and review the mission, values, and strategies of the organization for currency and relevancy by regularly reviewing the mission, vision, and values; annually assessing action plans and strategies relative to environmental trends; and evaluating organizational outcomes relative to defined action plans, strategies, and environmental trends.
- Board members actively participate in governance functions of the organization by electing officers; actively participating in board development activities; evaluating effectiveness of governance structure and function; establishing policy that enhances consumer protection through certification processes; establishing policy that facilitates the certification process for qualified surgical practitioners; and establishing policy that adheres to accepted legal, regulatory, and psychometric standards.
- Board members assure sound management of the organization's financial resources by annually approving the budget, monitoring the budget throughout the year, annually reviewing external audit reports of the organization, providing for appropriate financial policies and projections, and assuring financial structures of the organization are adequate for current and long-range needs and priorities.
- Board members ensure executive leadership by hiring and assessing the performance of the executive director and providing ongoing, meaningful feedback to the executive director.
- Board members represent the organization by articulating its positions to key stakeholders.
- Board members identify the organization's strategic plan by reviewing and analyzing environmental trends, establishing priorities and recommending strategies to achieve organizational outcomes, monitoring the impact and implications of CNOR and CRNFA certification on patient care and healthcare delivery systems, proactively seeking and incorporating the input of key stakeholders, and complying with policies and procedures as outlined in relevant manuals and documents.

Frequently Asked Questions about the CCI Board of Directors
Q. How can I become a CCI board member?
A. If you have previously served on a CCI committee, you are encouraged to send in a willingness-to-serve form before May 1st. The CCI Governance Committee reviews all forms and nominates CNOR and CRNFA candidates for open board positions. The Fall CCI News, mailed to all certificants, contains the slate of candidates and a ballot. All certificants are eligible to vote for candidates, and the winners are announced after the CCI winter board meeting.
Q. How long is a director's term of service?
A. The term of office is three years, and a member may be re-elected by the board for two subsequent terms.
Q. Do I have to be certified to be on the CCI Board of Directors?
A. To be considered for an RN position on the board, the applicant must be a CNOR or a CRNFA. The consumer representative position does not require certification.
Q. How much travel is required of a board member?
A. Approximately ten to twelve days per year.
Q. Do I have to pay my own travel expenses for board business?
A. No, CCI pays all travel and related expenses for required board business.
