Leadership Module (One of the six modules comprising the “Certificate Program for Surgical Services Management”)
Julia A. Thompson, RN, PhD, CNS, CNOR
Continuing education contact hours: 1.3

The provision of surgical services requires an intricate organizational structure. Because numerous skills from a variety of health care professionals are required, managers must direct many types of personnel to deliver quality patient care. Therefore, surgical services managers must demonstrate effective leadership skills to motivate and direct members of the surgical team.

This module reviews current approaches in the development of the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies needed for effective leadership. It explores various characteristics of self and relationships within the context of the practice setting. The basic concepts of leadership, including leadership styles and principles, are reviewed. The related aspects of emotional intelligence, leading one’s self, and succession planning also are explored.

Looking for More Tips to Promote your CNOR or CRNFA – CCI Can Help
Now that you’ve earned your CNOR, how are you going to promote it? In the last few years, CCI has created a brochure with tips for certificants on how to market their newly earned credential. They can be as simple as sending a press release to a hospital newsletter or discussing your certification status and how it impacts your patients.  Here are some tips:

  • Make sure a copy of your certificate is included in your personnel file.
  • Discuss your certification status and how it values the healthcare team and patients with your supervisor.
  • Create a portfolio that documents your accomplishments.
  • Mentor a colleague interested in certification.
  • Support certification for all perioperative nurses by becoming a CCI Champion, a network of CNOR-certified nurses dedicated to promoting certification.
  • Volunteer your time and share your commitment by serving in a CCI leadership position or on a committee.

Mark Your Calendars – Recertify by Tuesday, July 1
Achieving recertification for your CNOR or CRNFA credential strengthens your leadership as a role model in the healthcare community at large and as a steward for the operating-room professional community. If you’re due to recertify this year, CCI has already sent you a copy of your recertification application and packet. If you haven’t received your copy, contact CCI at info@cc-institute.org or call 888-257-2667.
If your CNOR is current and you’re due to recertify, you can do so using one of four available methods: (1) contact hours; (2) the portfolio; (3) points, or (4) you can retake the CNOR exam. If you fail to recertify by the deadline, let your CNOR credential lapse and want to earn it back, you can either take the CNOR exam again or use the portfolio.

Your credential reflects a deep personal commitment and accountability that inspire credibility and confidence in your professional knowledge. It also shows your dedication to higher standards of care with patients and peers, and as a representative of your workplace.
