Here’s what we heard at Congress…
Hundreds of certificants visited both the Certification Booth and the Oasis at AORN Congress 2008. They shared valuable feedback on CCI’s various programs and projects. Here’s a sampling of some of the most important items we heard.
- Certificants sought further information on the new portfolio option for recertification. The portfolio is only one of four options to recertify. Read below for more detailed information.
- Certificants were interested in more information about the Management Certificate Program for Surgical Services Management. The program, launched in 2007, is available for purchase. Read below for more information.
- Certificants want information on marketing their credential. Read below for a link to a brochure CCI produced to help in this area.

Important Message: CCI Clarifies Portfolio Requirements for Recertification and Reactivation
Continuing Education is still an available option to recertify
Since earlier this year, CCI has sent a variety of messages about the new professional portfolio and how it can be used to recertify an existing CNOR credential. We understand from our valuable discussions with certificants at Congress, that there may be some confusion about the portfolio. We’d like to clarify any confusion.
The new portfolio is an optional method of recertifying your CNOR.
CNORs will still be able to recertify using the continuing education (CE) option. The portfolio will not replace the CE method of recertification. You’ve probably read in earlier monthly updates and CCI News information about reactivation and recertification—two terms that mean very different things.
Reactivation is a term that CCI uses to describe the process of earning back a CNOR credential that has lapsed or was not renewed. To reactivate a lapsed credential (one that wasn’t renewed by the expiration date), candidates can take the CNOR exam or use the portfolio. These are the only two options available to reactivate a lapsed credential.
Recertification is the process used to maintain your certification without interruption. If your CNOR is current and you’re due to recertify you can do so using one of four available methods: (1) contact hours; (2) the portfolio; (3) the point system (available through 2009 only); or, (4) you can retake the CNOR exam. If you fail to recertify by the deadline, let your CNOR credential lapse and want to earn it back, you can either take the CNOR exam again or use the portfolio.
Thank you to those who visited our booth at Congress to alert us to the confusion among our certificants about this issue. We appreciate the dialogue with you and value the opportunity to clarify these options for maintaining the CNOR.
Management Certificate Program – Order your Copy Today
CCI’s Certificate Program for Surgical Services Management is available for purchase. This unique program is designed for anyone currently working in a management role or people who aspire to it. Drawing on the experience of six veteran managers and a wealth of information received during a national survey of nurse managers, CCI developed the self-paced program as an avenue for professional development. Employers benefit too by using the program as a tool to promote qualified staff from within.
Candidates can customize the program after completing an online diagnostic tool highlighting areas where they need more work. Not only can they customize the content, they can also customize the timeline. The program is self-paced and candidates have up to one year after purchase to complete the six modules of study including:
- Professionalism
- Leadership
- Communication and Relationship Management
- Financial Management
- Surgical Services
- Human Resource Management
After passing the post assessment, you receive your Certificate of Mastery indicating you have completed the program. This is not a certification program like the CNOR or CRNFA. The certificate program focuses on training and education in a specific area. Detailed information about the article is available online.

Looking for Tips to Market your Credential – Let CCI Help
Now that you’ve earned your CNOR, how are you going to promote it? In the last few years, CCI has created a brochure with tips for certificants on how to market their newly earned credential. They can be as simple as sending a press release to a hospital newsletter or discussing your certification status and how it impacts your patients. For more tips, click here to download a copy of the brochure.
Opportunities for Involvement with CCI
We are seeking writers and reviewers for the CNOR and CRNFA exams and a new board member for 2009. If you are interested in participating, please visit our Current Opportunities to Serve page, and fill out a Willingness to Serve form.
