Survey Tool
The PVCT© is a survey tool developed by CCI to determine the perceived value of certification among operating room nurses. In a recent study of 2323 certified and noncertified operating-room nurses, internal consistency reliability (coefficient alpha) for the PVCT© was .94. Two factors, intrinsic and extrinsic values of certification, explained 59.2 percent of the variance, with all factor loadings at or above .58.

Reliability and Validity of The Perceived Value of Certification Tool (PVCT)© contains 18 declarative statements about the perceived value of certification.
Respondents indicate their level of agreement or disagreement with the statements using a Likert-type response format with responses of strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree, and no opinion.
Six nationally sampled groups of perioperative nurses or nurse administrators have responded to the instrument.
Responses were received from two groups of CNOR-certified nurses (N=1398 and N=954); two groups of non-certificants (N=594 and N=675); and two groups of nurse administrators (N=1577 and N=694). Calculation of coefficient alpha for the 18-item PVCT© yielded standardized alphas (a) among groups ranging from .92-.95.
Construct validity was verified with factor analysis which yielded either a two or three-factor solution, depending on the group. The two-factor solution yielded factors identified as Intrinsic value of certification (12 items) and Extrinsic value of certification (6 items). When a three-factor solution occurred, items from the Intrinsic factor formed two factors.
The intrinsic items, however, did not consistently load on the same factor, factor loadings were below .50 in some analyses, there were multiple cross-loadings, and the scree plot showed flattening after extraction of two factors. The two-factor solution, therefore, is the most conceptually consistent solution.
The consistency is validated by all intrinsic items loading on one factor and extrinsic items loading on a second factor in every automatic or forced two-factor analysis. Explained variance for the two-factor solution ranges from 56.1% to 60.8%. Second order factor analysis yields a single factor solution identified as Perceived Value of Certification.
The Intrinsic value factor has a standardized alpha (a) ranging between .92 to .94 and the Extrinsic value factor has a standardized alpha (a) ranging between .85 to .86. Extrinsic values are items 5, 6, 7, 8, 17, and 18. The PVCT© can be used to measure Intrinsic and Extrinsic values of certification separately or as a total instrument to measure Perceived Value of Certification.
