Key messages

The following are key messages that can be scientifically supported by the findings of the research project.

1. Nurses in this study, regardless of demographic group, valued certification.

2. Nurses overall did not feel certification increased salary.

3. There were two motivators for seeking certification - internal rewards (i.e.: credibility, accountability), and external rewards (employee and peer recognition and marketability.)

4. Professional commitment was the primary driver for seeking certification.

5. Nurses in this study believed that certification enhanced professional credibility.

6. Certified nurses believed that certification enhanced their marketability.

7. Neither age nor years of experience changed perceptions of the value of certification.

8. Nurses holding one specialty nursing certification are less likely to seek an additional specialty nursing certification.

9. Administrators highly value certification.

10. Administrators have the ability to directly impact external rewards offered to nurses and therefore also can use those rewards to motivate nurses to become certified.

11. More experienced nurses are less likely to pursue certification.

12. Barriers to seeking certification and reasons for allowing certification to lapse are primarily due to a lack of external rewards linked to certification.

13. Overall CRNFAs highly value certification.

14. The Perceived Value of Certification Tool (PVCT©) was statistically determined to be reliable and valid and therefore further research can be effectively replicated using this instrument.

The motivation for seeking certification fell within two categories: internal and external rewards. The value statements that fall within each category are provided below.
