Research

The mission of CCI is to provide leadership for comprehensive competency credentialing that promotes quality patient care. Performing scholarly research and leveraging that research to support the value of credentialing is central to that mission. CCI has continued to implement its multifaceted research agenda as evidenced by its ongoing activities in the area of publishing, scholarship, and coalition building.

Value of Certification

CCI has been particularly focused on finding evidence supporting the value of the CNOR and CRNFA credentials. The board of directors strongly believes that providing a research-based answer to the value of certification will provide meaningful and relevant information to its constituents, to patients, and to the health care community at large. In the last several years, CCI research committee members, along with headquarters staff and key research experts, have begun to answer the question of what operating room nurses value about CNOR and CRNFA certification. The results of our research can be found in published works and in the key messages scientifically supported by that research. The Perceived Value of Certification Tool (PVCT©) is the instrument used to conduct this research. This valid and reliable instrument has been used by other scholars and is available upon request. The American Board of Nursing Specialties (ABNS) has replicated this research across nursing specialties.

Patient Safety and Continued Competency

The CCI Think Tank which was held in mid-June 2005, focused on how we can use the latest in learning technologies and methodologies to build a bridge between competency and patient safety. This dynamic and interdisciplinary group addressed futuristic implications of competency and patient safety as well as barriers and strategies for change. The pre-event White Paper, Bridging the Gap between Patient Safety and Healthcare Provider Competency contains a contemporary synthesis of the current healthcare issues and provocative questions addressing competency of providers. This paper also contains a thorough reference page and many related websites that can be helpful for further study and understanding. The two-day agenda included a panel discussion on the future of competency and patient safety, small and large group discussions, experiential learning, visioning exercises, audience response technology, and real-time reports. The post-meeting white paper documents the dialogue, methods and findings from this innovative, cutting-edge event.

Professional Portfolios

CCI has most recently engaged in activities related to professional portfolios as a method for assessing and validating professional continued competency. The CCI Research Committee conducted an integrative review of literature on the use of professional portfolios as a method of assessing, demonstrating, and validating professional nursing competency. A related article is scheduled for publication in the Journal of Trauma Nursing. CCI has also presented on the topic of professional portfolios (Powerpoint Presentation) and intends to offer the portfolio program as an optional method for recertification and reactivation of the CNOR credential beginning in 2008.
