Management Modules

Since earlier this year, CCI has been working with our authors and development team on the Certificate Program for Surgical Services Management — the first of its kind for the health care community. The online demonstration of the Web-based tool debuted at the AORN Congress in March. The final stages are nearing completion and preparations are underway to launch the program in June. CCI has recruited skilled and respected perioperative nurses to author the six modules of the program. Modules will be available for purchase individually or collectively as part of the certificate program. The authors provide exclusive previews of their modules below. More information on taking part in the program.

Professionalism
Kathryn Schroeter, RN, PhD, CNOR
Continuing education contact hours: 1.4

Professionalism in nursing requires a body of knowledge, service to others, advocacy, autonomy, self-regulation, a code of ethics, participation in professional societies, and commitment to life-long learning. Ethics include values, codes, and principles that govern decisions in behavioral relationships, nursing education, research, and practice. Ensuring professional practice standards involves being accountable to your employer, your patients, and to yourself for your actions and the implementation of a high ethical standard. Through translating knowledge into action, professional practice standards are met. The Professionalism in Nursing module explores the organizational culture, values, and relationships and the structures and processes required for developing and sustaining effective professional practices.

Leadership
Julia A. Thompson, RN, PhD, CNS, CNOR
Continuing education contact hours: 1.3

The provision of surgical services requires an intricate organizational structure. Because numerous skills from a variety of health care professionals are required, managers must direct many types of personnel to deliver quality patient care. Therefore, surgical services managers must demonstrate effective leadership skills to motivate and direct members of the surgical team. This module reviews current approaches in the development of the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies needed for effective leadership. It explores various characteristics of self and relationships within the context of the practice setting. The basic concepts of leadership, including leadership styles and principles, are reviewed. The related aspects of emotional intelligence, leading one’s self, and succession planning also are explored.

Communication & Relationship Management
Cecil A. King, RN, MS, CNOR
Continuing education contact hours: 1.5

The nurse administrator is responsible for creating an environment that fosters the nursing staff to be accountable for their own practice, to utilize critical thinking, and to participate in decisions affecting nursing and patient care. Establishing such an environment requires relationships, interdisciplinary collaboration, leadership, and, most of all, the ability to communicate effectively. This module looks at how serving as a catalyst and role model, the perioperative manager provides leadership and direction in concurrence with the organization’s mission and values. Through effective communication, the manager fosters interdisciplinary and collaborative relationships and facilitates positive conflict resolution.

Financial Management
Linda Groah, RN, MSN, CNOR, CNAA, FAAN
Continuing education contact hours: 1.4

The evolution of perioperative services from a revenue producing department to an expense department has focused attention on financial management as an essential competency for perioperative managers. This module focuses on preparing the operating and capital budgets, managing the budgets, and examining the factors that affect the budget process. Processes for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of preoperative services are discussed, and sample templates are included to assist in achieving effective management of the resources. The objectives of the modules include: identify the basics of developing an operating budget, identify methods to control costs while preserving quality of care for the surgical patient, define successful practices in managing resources in the operating room, and discuss methods of monitoring productivity of perioperative services.

Surgical Services
Beth Honkomp, RN, MSN, MBA, CNAA, BC
Continuing education contact hours: 1.6

The surgical services management module presents information on major areas that a manager must understand and demonstrate competence in running the surgical services area. The module is based on task statements derived from a recent surgical services job analysis. The analysis suggested that the surgical services manager must demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the environment, be cognizant of the many regulations affecting the area, understand the necessity of coordination of work processes, and use appropriate metrics to evaluate the effectiveness of the work performed. The module is divided into four chapters about the conditions affecting the environment: regulations, compliance and reporting, coordination of work processes, and evaluation of effectiveness. The surgical services module provides several practical tools to assist the manager in gaining competency in leading in a very complex environment, such as a tool to analyze an untoward patient event, monitoring of patient safety, and an example of a perioperative dashboard.

Human Resource Management
Sherron Kurtz, RN, MSN, CNOR, CNAA
Continuing education contact hours: 1.9

Human resource management is critically important to any surgical services or operating room manager. Today’s manager must manage all aspects of a variety of resources. It can be argued that the most critical resource is the “human resource.” This module touches on many aspects of human resource management. Mastering the skills discussed in this module will assist a manager to manage those resources successfully. Of particular interest today is recruitment and retention. We are in the midst of a severe nursing shortage, and managers need all the resources they can muster to attract and retain qualified staff members who will help them be successful.
