2005 Think Tank Details

  • Who: Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI)
  • What: THE FUTURE OF LEARNING: Building a Bridge between Competency and Patient Safety
  • When: June 15–16, 2005
  • Where: Marriott Philadelphia Downtown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
  • Why: The CCI Think Tank is designed with a singular exploratory focus: How can we use the latest methods and technologies from the field of learning to build a bridge or holistic vision between competency development in healthcare and actual patient safety and quality patient care?

On June 15-16, 2005, CCI hosted it’s inaugural Think Tank in Philadelphia. Entitled The Future of Learning: Building a Bridge between Competency and Patient Safety, this meeting engaged a conversation among some of the top minds in healthcare education and some of the top progressive professionals in various healthcare specialties. A pre-event white paper, designed to stimulate creative thinking, contained a contemporary synthesis of the current healthcare issues and posed provocative questions addressing competency of providers. Thirty-six participants representing a cross-section of medical, surgical, nursing, and pharmaceutical specialty groups, competency coalitions, councils of state medical and nursing boards, professional associations, hospital systems, academia, consumer advocacy, learning technology and methodology leaders, and industry attended the event. Sponsorship was provided by Immersion Medical; Laerdal; McKesson Provider Technologies; Medical Education Technologies, Inc.; Thomson Delmar Learning; and Zimmer, Inc.

CCI developed the Think Tank around the belief that an action oriented agenda could be created and implemented to promote improvements in nursing competency, and ultimately patient safety. The agenda was focused on advancing competency development, assessment, and education and creating a vision for patient safety. Think Tank attendees responded to two thought-provoking questions: What are your three to five critical factors for developing competencies in healthcare that will build the bridge to patient safety and describe the attributes of the healthcare system in 2015 as you perceive them.

The two-day agenda included a panel discussion on the future of nursing competency and patient safety, small and large group discussions, experiential learning, visioning exercises, audience response technology, and real-time reports.

All attendees considered the Think Tank a great success, since it identified and addressed particular needs that CCI can address. These needs are: synthesizing of data into research and white papers on targeted topics within nursing and healthcare as they pertain to competency; providing continued forums for leaders in competency development and assessment and education; developing web-based technologies that provide information as well as training, and creating products and services that develop teams, leadership, and technical competencies for nursing and all of healthcare.
