CNOR Inactive Status
Have you missed the deadline for earning contact hours or completing your activities for Points or Portfolio? Or, do you not meet the eligibility requirements such as currently working in the OR? You can file for an extension by applying for Inactive Status. Your credential is still active until your expiration date.
The Inactive Status allows you to put your credential on hold while you meet the recertification requirements. In addition, it shifts the time period during which you must complete the requirements for recertification. You still have five years to meet the requirements, but the five year time period changes depending on when you recertify. Inactive Status is good for up to three years, and you may only apply for Inactive Status once.
For example, if you are due to recertify in 2012 and are short on CEs, you may go on Inactive Status. You may apply to recertify your credential any time during 2013, 2014, or 2015.
The time period during which you must earn your contact hours and/or activities depends on when you recertify as follows:
| 2012 | 2013 | January 1, 2008 - December 31, 2012 |
| 2012 | 2014 | January 1, 2009 - December 31, 2013 |
| 2012 | 2015 | January 1, 2010 - December 31, 2014 |
You may reactivate your CNOR credential at any time during the three-year period as long as you meet the recertification requirements in effect at that time. Policies are subject to change so make sure to keep abreast of any changes that occur. If you do not reactivate your credential during the three year inactive period, you will have to retire your credential with the Emeritus Status or let it lapse.
After filing Inactive status you will need to wait until January of the following year to log hours earned (including AORN hours). You must wait to recertify your credential until January of the year following the year you filed for inactive status.
While your status is Inactive, you may not use your CNOR credential.
Want to Ensure you Have No Lapse in Your Certification?
With Inactive Status, it is possible to have no lapse in your certification. If you are due to recertify in 2012 and do not meet the recertification requirements, apply for Inactive status before December 31, 2012. During the 2012 year, you must earn your contact hours and /or activities. Beginning early January 2013, you may apply for recertification.
Deadlines
If you are due to recertify in 2012 and are selecting to put your credential on Inactive Status, you must complete the online Inactive application by July 1, 2012 to avoid the additional $75.00 late fee. The earliest you are eligible to recertify is January 1, 2013.
Fees
The application fee for Inactive Status is $175 and $95 for AORN members. The late fee for applications submitted between July 2 and December 31 is an additional $75. When you apply for recertification you will pay the recertification fee applicable at that time.
