About Inactive Status
You can apply for inactive status if you are a currently a CNOR or CRNFA, and you do not meet recertification eligibility requirements, but you do not wish to lose your certification status.

While your status is considered inactive, you MAY NOT USE your CNOR or CRNFA credential.

Inactive Status Rules

The fee for inactive status is $95 for AORN members and $175 for non-AORN members.

The deadline to apply for inactive status is July 1. Inactive applications received between July 2 and December 31 must be accompanied by a late fee of $75 in addition to the application fee.

  • Reactivation

    Your credential will be reactivated upon submission of a completed recertification application form and recertification fee.

    Duration: You may choose to reactivate your credential after only one year of inactive status, or you may choose to stay inactive for the full three-year inactive status cycle. If you choose inactive status in , the earliest you will be eligible to recertify is January 1, .

    Contact Hours: To reactivate your credential after choosing inactive status, you must meet all the recertification eligibility requirements in effect at that time within your inactive period. Contact hours must have been accrued in the five-and-a-half-year period immediately preceding the new active date.

    For example, Jane Doe is due to recertify in 2008 but decides to go inactive on July 1, 2008. (Her original recertification period was from January 1, 2003, through June 30, 2008.) Using contact hours, she meets the requirement of being employed at some time within the two years immediately before applying for recertification in 2009. Her contact-hour–accrual period must fall between January 1, 2004, and June 30, 2009.

    You will be mailed a recertification application in the year . You can choose to either remain inactive for one additional three-year inactive cycle or reactivate your by following the recertification policies in effect at that time.
