How to Earn Points

 

Eligible Activities and Number of Points

Continuing Education
  • Each contact hour is worth 2 points (fractions may be included).
  • A maximum of 100 points (50 contact hours) is allowed.
  • Example: 1 contact hour equals 2 points; 2 contact hours equal 4 points.
  • Acceptable documentation of contact hours is a copy of certificate of attendance from an acceptable provider.

Academic Study (toward degree completion)
  • 1 semester hour equals 15 points.
  • 1 quarter hour equals 10 points.
  • You can acquire unlimited points in this category.
Acceptable documentation of academic study toward degree completion is a copy of your transcript with the specific course used to meet the recertification requirements highlighted on the transcript copy.


Teaching
  • Each class equals 30 points.
  • Teaching in an academic setting (.e.g., a college or university).
  • A maximum of two classes per academic year.

Publishing

Acceptable documentation for a published article or book chapter is a copy of the title page, a table of contents, or an abstract proving you're the author, coauthor, or contributor.


    Professional journal article
  • Each article equals 25 points.
  • A maximum of three articles is allowed; you must include the title page of each article.

    Chapter in perioperative book
  • Each chapter equals 40 points.
  • A maximum of three articles is allowed; you must include the title page of each chapter.

    Author or editor of perioperative book
  • Each book equals 50 points.

    Guest editor of journal issue
  • Each issue equals 10 points.
  • A maximum of three is allowed; you must include the journal page indicating role.

    Book review
  • Each review equals 5 points.
  • A maximum of three reviews is allowed.

Presentations

Acceptable documentation of presentation is program brochure, course syllabi, or letter from the offering provider identifying your participation as the offering presenter. All presentations and seminars must be on different topics.

  • A 30- to 60-minute in-service presentation; each presentation equals 10 points.
  • A maximum of five presentations is allowed.
  • A 4- to 8-hour seminar or AORN Congress presentation; each seminar equals 30 points.
  • A maximum of three seminars is allowed.

Service as a board or committee member for any professional healthcare organization

Acceptable documentation of service is a completed points verification form.
  • 20 points per year for a committee or board member.
  • A maximum of 60 points per year is allowed.
  • Please list years served for each board or committee.

    National or local chapter officer or board member Eligible offices: president, vice-president, president-elect, secretary, treasurer,
  • Chair equals 20 points per year.

    National or local committee member.
  • Membership equals 20 points per year.

    Specialty Assembly Governing Council
  • Membership equals 20 points per year.

    Service on any committee in a healthcare facility (Examples: hospital, surgery center, physician office, infection control, quality improvement, policy and procedure, education, research.)
  • Each committee membership equals 20 points per year.
  • A maximum of five different committee memberships is allowed.
  • A minimum of six meetings per year is required.

Cross Training in a New Area

Acceptable documentation of service is a completed points verification form. Cross training in a new area must have occurred during current recertification cycle (January 1, 2000 – June 30, 2005).

Examples: GI lab, cath lab, wound care, IV therapy, grand rounds.

  • Each area equals 30 points.
  • A maximum of 90 points is allowed.
  • Orientation to a new facility is not eligible.

Precepting/Mentoring in the RNFA Role

Acceptable documentation of service is a completed points verification form.
  • Each student/employee equals 25 points.
  • A maximum of three different employees is allowed.
Includes precepting or mentoring either a student RNFA or a new employee RNFA in the RNFA role.
