Practice Hours Requirement

Beginning in 2005, CRNFAs who want to recertify must have accumulated a certain number of practice hours as an RNFA during the five-and-one-half–year recertification cycle, depending on the recertification method they choose. Clinical practice hours must be accumulated between January 1, of the year you certified or recertified, and June 30, of the year you are due to recertify.

Track your practice hours online, or download the CRNFA documentation form.

For contact hour recertifiers:
  • If you submit 1,000 clinical practice hours, you will need 200 contact hours. At least 700 practice hours must be intraoperative care.
  • If you submit 500 clinical practice hours, you will need 300 contact hours. At least 350 practice hours must be intraoperative care.

For point recertifiers:
  • If you submit 1,000 clinical practice hours, you will need 400 points. At least 700 practice hours must be intraoperative care.
  • If you submit 500 clinical practice hours, you will need 500 points. At least 350 practice hours must be intraoperative care.

For exam recertifiers:
  • You will need 1,000 clinical practice hours to recertify by exam. At least 700 practice hours must be intraoperative care.

Audit Documentation

If you're selected for audit, you must submit information on your practice hours that includes the date, surgeon's initials, surgical procedure, and time you spent in pre, intra, or postoperative period. If you haven't documented such information, you must submit a letter — from one or more of the surgeons you've assisted — that includes dates, types of cases, and the approximate number of hours you worked each month.

Due to the random nature of audit selection, if you're audited in one recertification cycle and are chosen for another audit in a future recertification cycle, that letter will not be acceptable for the second audit. In that case, you'll be required to provide detailed documentation of your practice hours as described above.
