Yoga
January 6, 2010

Michelle Byrne RN, PhD, CNOR
CCI President 2009-2010

Happy New Year.. It seems like yesterday we were fretting about Y2K and the next millennium… and just think that was a decade ago! What that tells me is that the next decade will speed by even faster. Think about your physical and mental health currently and anticipate what that will look like in 2020… I know age is a state of mind (and body). So what are you doing to keep your mind/ body healthy and youthful?

In the December AORN Journal editorial column I wrote a brief primer on yoga . The column is a Q & A about what yoga is about and how to take the next step in attending a class. I have been practicing yoga for the past decade and can testify that it really helps me with mental and physical stress, as well as lessening aches and pains. I used to have occasional lower back pain, and never do anymore. Fellow yogi’s tell me that it has helped them lose weight, gain flexibility, diminish headaches, lower blood sugar, and lower blood pressure. I do want readers to note that this is a blog and not an evidenced based paper… so I am not going to do a literature review on the benefits of yoga... you will have to see for yourself.

Make 2010 a great year and give yourself a gift of yoga and better health. Namaste.
